Instead of boxing yourself into one niche or going completely general, I have a better idea: center your content on a goal. I will tell you how it works.
I've learned to use this approach as well. I don't focus on a specific niche because I believe "you are the niche."
What that means is since you keep learning new things and your interests keep on changing as a person, so will your niche and content.
I find it quite impossible to talk about one thing for the rest of your life especially if you're a creative.
That why, like you've mentioned, it's better to center your content around one ultimate goal and let that guide whatever you talk about.
An example of this is what I'm doing with Project Self. The ultimate goal with it is to become the best version of myself while I make money from the process. So whatever content I put out has to align with achieving this goal. And so whoever wants to become their better version while earning from it will become part of my audience and will resonate with my content without having to box myself in a box.
I could go on explaining but I think you've already done a good job.
Love how we resonate brother. Can’t agree more. The best part of writing about our journey as you mentioned is that whatever you publish is yours. No one can steal it and no one can copy it. As you keep writing, the value you put out there compounds for you. This includes how you overcome a problem, how you build this product, and how you grow. Niche is for side hustles. Writing about yourself and your goals means you are serious about building a business.
Yeah, thanks a lot. Because I've come to see that for most people, niching is the art of forcing yourself into writing on only a single topic and industry; it's a fallacy.
For this reason, I especially loved your analogy of the travel writer who became a dad. What happens to his brand if he begins to travel less? His niche there isn't really “traveling tips.” it is HIM, and his experience travelling.
I tried writing within a niche for a couple of years and I agree with you completely that it requires discipline. Sometimes you want to write about other topics because you want to express yourself or be helpful in a different way. You cannot do that when you are writing within a niche. It’s always best if we write what flows. :)

Let's get it done.
I think niching is not the same thing as “forcing yourself to fit into a box.”
Interesting. Care to elaborate?

Yes, the niche is the person themselves and the goal they want to achieve in their lives. It’s nice we resonate here. 😁
Niching down takes a lot of discipline, which I don’t have lol
